Website Design Packages & Prices in South Africa (2026): What Each Tier Should Include
Ask five South African web designers for a price and you will get five answers between R1,500 and R50,000 – often for what sounds like the same website. Packages are named “Starter”, “Business” and “Pro”, but what is actually inside them varies wildly, and the fine print is where the real price lives.
This guide breaks down what website design packages actually cost in South Africa in 2026, what each tier should include, what web designers charge by the hour, and how to compare quotes so you know you are comparing like with like.
The short answer: website design prices in South Africa, 2026
| Package type | Once-off price | Monthly plan price | Typically suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-page / landing page | R1,500 – R4,000 | R150 – R250/month | Very new businesses, single offers, campaigns |
| Small business site (up to 5 pages) | R5,000 – R15,000 | R250 – R600/month | Trades, service businesses, consultants |
| Larger business site (10–20 pages) | R15,000 – R40,000 | R800 – R2,000/month | Multi-service or multi-branch businesses |
| Online store (e-commerce) | R10,000 – R60,000 | R390 – R2,500/month | Shops selling physical or digital products |
| Custom web application | R50,000+ | Quoted | Booking platforms, portals, integrations |
Most small South African businesses need the second row: a professionally designed site of around five pages. The rest of this guide explains why the prices within each row vary so much, and what you should expect to get at each level.
What should be in each package
One-page website (R1,500 – R4,000)
A single scrolling page with your services, a few photos, contact details and a WhatsApp or call button. It is enough to look legitimate when someone searches your name, and enough to run an ad campaign to.
What it usually cannot do well is rank on Google for several different services, because there is only one page for Google to show. If you offer more than one or two services, you will outgrow it quickly.
Small business website, up to 5 pages (R5,000 – R15,000)
This is the standard package for most trades and service businesses. A fair package at this level should include:
- Home, services, about, gallery or projects, and contact pages
- Mobile-friendly design – most of your visitors will be on a phone
- A contact form and click-to-call / WhatsApp buttons
- Basic on-page SEO – page titles, descriptions, headings and a sitemap submitted to Google
- SSL (the padlock) so browsers do not warn people away
- Google Maps embed and links to your Google Business Profile
What often is not included at the lower end: hosting, the domain, business email, copywriting and any changes after launch. That is why one R6,000 quote and another R12,000 quote can end up costing about the same in the first year.
Larger business website, 10–20 pages (R15,000 – R40,000)
Separate pages for each service and each area you work in, a blog, more detailed SEO work, and usually a more custom design. This is where a site starts to pull in Google traffic for many different searches rather than just your business name.
E-commerce website (R10,000 – R60,000)
The price depends mostly on how many products you have and how much work goes into loading them. A store with 20 products and PayFast or Yoco payments sits at the bottom of the range. A store with hundreds of products, variations, courier integration and stock syncing sits at the top. Ongoing costs are higher too: e-commerce sites need more updates, security and hosting resources.
Custom web applications (R50,000+)
Booking systems, client portals, quoting tools and integrations with your accounting or CRM software. These are quoted per project, and you should expect a written specification before anyone gives you a price.
Why two quotes for “the same” website can differ by R10,000
When quotes are far apart, the difference is almost always in one of these:
- Template vs custom design. A customised template is faster to build and perfectly good for most small businesses. A fully custom design takes more hours and costs more.
- Who writes the words. Copywriting is the most underestimated part of a website. If you have to write every page yourself, the build is cheaper but the site often ends up thinner – and that hurts both enquiries and Google rankings.
- Hosting, domain and email. Some quotes include the first year; many do not. Hosting alone typically adds R80 – R200 a month.
- SEO work. “SEO included” can mean anything from a plugin installed to proper keyword research and page-by-page optimisation.
- Revisions. Two rounds of changes or unlimited? This matters more than people expect.
- Changes after launch. The site will need updates – new prices, new photos, a new service. Ask whether these are included or billed hourly.
How much do web designers charge per hour in South Africa?
For changes, updates and small jobs outside a package, South African web designers typically charge:
| Who | Typical 2026 rate |
|---|---|
| Freelancer, junior | R250 – R450 per hour |
| Freelancer, experienced | R450 – R750 per hour |
| Agency | R600 – R1,200 per hour |
This is the hidden cost of a once-off website. A price change, a new page and a plugin problem can easily add up to three or four hours a year – R2,000 to R4,000 on top of the build and hosting.
Once-off package or monthly plan?
Many South African web designers now offer the same packages on a monthly plan, with no upfront cost and hosting, domain and maintenance included. For a five-page site that usually runs R250 to R600 a month.
Over three years, an all-inclusive monthly plan is often cheaper than a once-off build once you add hosting and changes – but contracts vary a lot, and some “free website” deals lock you in for 36 months. We cover the maths and the contract traps in detail in our guide to websites on monthly payment in South Africa.
Red flags in cheap website packages
- The domain registered in the designer’s name. If you leave, you may lose the address on your vans and business cards. Insist it is registered to your business.
- No mention of mobile. In 2026 every package should be mobile-first. If a quote does not say so, ask.
- “Unlimited pages” for R1,500. Pages without content do nothing. Ask who is writing them.
- No access to your own site. You should be given an admin login, or at least a written promise that you can have one.
- Vague maintenance. “Maintenance included” should say what it covers: updates, backups, how many changes a month.
- Long contracts with cancellation fees. Find out what it costs to leave in month one, in writing.
How to compare website quotes properly
Put every quote into the same table before you decide. Ask each designer to answer these in writing:
- How many pages are included, and what does an extra page cost?
- Is the design custom or a customised template?
- Who writes the content?
- Are hosting, the .co.za domain, SSL and business email included, and for how long?
- What SEO work is included, specifically?
- How many rounds of revisions?
- What do changes cost after launch?
- Is the domain registered in my business name, and do I get admin access?
- Is there a contract, and what does it cost to cancel?
- How long until the site is live?
Then add up the total cost over two years – build, hosting, domain, email and a realistic number of changes. That number, not the headline price, is the one to compare.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a website cost in South Africa in 2026?
A small business website of up to five pages typically costs R5,000 to R15,000 once-off, or R250 to R600 a month on an all-inclusive plan. One-page sites start around R1,500, larger sites run R15,000 to R40,000, and online stores R10,000 to R60,000.
What is included in an affordable website design package?
At minimum: a mobile-friendly design of around five pages, a contact form, click-to-call or WhatsApp buttons, SSL and basic on-page SEO. Better packages also include hosting, a .co.za domain, business email and some changes after launch.
How much do web designers charge per hour in South Africa?
Typically R250 to R450 an hour for junior freelancers, R450 to R750 for experienced freelancers and R600 to R1,200 for agencies in 2026.
What are typical monthly web design costs?
All-inclusive monthly website plans in South Africa usually cost R250 to R600 a month for a small business site, and R390 to R2,500 a month for an online store. Hosting on its own costs R80 to R200 a month.
Is a cheap website worth it?
It can be, if the domain is in your name, the site is mobile-friendly and someone is responsible for keeping it updated. A cheap website becomes expensive when it is never updated, does not appear on Google or locks you into a long contract.
How long does it take to build a website?
A five-page small business website usually takes five to ten working days once you have supplied your content and photos. Online stores and larger sites take two to six weeks depending on the number of pages and products.
Do I need to pay for hosting separately?
With most once-off packages, yes – hosting, the domain and email are billed separately after the first year, if not from day one. Most monthly plans include them.
Final thoughts
The cheapest website package is rarely the cheapest website. Compare quotes on what they include, who owns the domain, and the total you will pay over two years – not the number on the first page of the quote.
If you would like a straight answer for your business, our website packages start at R250 a month, and we also build online stores from R390 a month. Get in touch and we will tell you which package actually fits – including when you do not need the bigger one.
