What R250 a Month Actually Covers

"Affordable" is a word every agency uses and almost none of them explain. Here is exactly what you get, and what you don't.

  • Your .co.za domain. Registered in your business name and renewed every year. Buying it yourself runs around R100 a year, plus remembering to renew it.
  • Hosting. Fast South African hosting, included. Standard small-business hosting costs R80 to R200 a month on its own.
  • An SSL certificate. Your site runs on HTTPS, so browsers don't warn visitors away and Google doesn't penalise you. Frequently billed as an extra elsewhere.
  • A professional business email address. info@yourbusiness.co.za instead of a Gmail address. This alone changes how customers read your quotes.
  • Basic SEO setup. Page titles, meta descriptions, a sitemap, and your site submitted to Google so it can actually be found.
  • One hour of maintenance every month. Content changes, price updates, new photos, plugin updates, backups. You message us, it gets done.

Add those up at normal market rates and you are past R250 before anyone has designed anything.

What it does not include, so there are no surprises: paid advertising, ongoing SEO campaigns, logo design, copywriting for a large site, or custom functionality such as booking systems and member logins. We offer all of those separately and will quote honestly if you need them.

What Does a Website Actually Cost in South Africa?

Published 2026 pricing across South African agencies and freelancers, compared honestly against ours.

The WebsterR0 upfrontR250/month, all inclusive

The average South African SME pays roughly R6,254 for a five-page website, then a further R500 to R2,500 a month to keep it hosted, maintained and updated. Over a full year that is around R12,000 to R36,000. Ours is R3,000 a year with nothing upfront, maintenance included.

Where once-off genuinely wins

  • If you have the cash available and intend to keep the same site untouched for five or more years, a once-off build can work out cheaper long term.
  • We would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.
  • What you give up is ongoing maintenance, security updates and someone to call when something breaks. Those get billed hourly, usually R450 to R900.

Where monthly wins

  • No capital outlay and no surprise invoices.
  • Your site does not quietly rot. Most small businesses that buy a once-off site never update it again.
  • Three years later, that site looks three years old — and by then it is a security risk too.

Monthly or Once-Off — Which Is Right for You?

Choose monthly if

  • You are starting out and cash flow matters.
  • You want someone actively maintaining the site.
  • You expect your business to change over the next few years.

Choose once-off if

  • You have the capital available now.
  • You have someone technical in-house.
  • Your site genuinely will not need to change.

We will tell you honestly which one suits you. We have talked businesses out of monthly plans before.

What It Costs You Over Three Years

Monthly pricing sounds more expensive until you run the full numbers. Here is an honest three-year comparison for a typical five-page small business website.

Cost over 3 yearsTypical once-off buildThe Webster
BuildR6,254 upfrontR0
Hosting (36 months)R2,880 – R7,200Included
Domain (3 years)R300Included
SSL certificateR0 – R1,500Included
Business emailR0 – R3,240Included
Maintenance (1 hr/month at R450)R16,200 if you pay for itIncluded
Three-year totalR9,434 – R34,694R9,000

The honest reading: if you buy a once-off site and then pay for nothing else — no maintenance, no support, no updates — you will spend around R9,400 over three years and we will cost roughly the same. If you actually maintain that site properly, monthly works out considerably cheaper.

The real difference is not the total. It is that one of these options leaves you with a website somebody is still looking after in year three, and the other usually does not.

Cheap Web Design: What to Watch Out For

Searching for an affordable website is sensible. Buying the cheapest one you find usually is not. Here is what actually goes wrong, so you can ask better questions — of us or anyone else.

  • The R500 "website" that is a single page. Plenty of ultra-cheap offers are one scrolling page with a contact form. Fine for some businesses, but it will not rank for more than one thing, because Google can only rank a page for what is on it.
  • Hosting that is not included. A low build price often hides a hosting bill starting the month after launch. Ask for the total first-year cost, not the build price.
  • No maintenance and no backups. WordPress sites need updating. A site left untouched for a year becomes a security risk, and when it breaks there is no backup to restore from.
  • You do not own the domain. Some providers register the domain in their own name, so when you want to leave you cannot take it with you. Always ask whose name it is registered in.
  • Stock everything. A template with stock photos and filler text looks like a hundred other sites. Google has no reason to rank it and customers have no reason to trust it.
  • Nobody answers the phone. The cheapest quotes often come from someone doing this on the side. Fine until you need a price changed before a Monday morning quote goes out.
  • Promises of page one. Nobody can guarantee a Google ranking. Basic SEO setup gets you indexed; ranking competitively is separate, ongoing work.

Five questions worth asking any provider:
What is the total cost in year one including hosting and domain? Whose name is the domain registered in? What is included in maintenance and what is billed hourly? Can I see three sites you have built for businesses like mine? What happens if I want to leave?

We are comfortable answering all five. Any provider worth using will be.

Is Your Business Invisible Online?

Most small businesses in South Africa are losing customers every day — not because of their product, but because of their online presence.

Your website looks outdated

A dated design tells customers you're behind the times — even if your service is excellent. First impressions happen in under 3 seconds.

Customers can't find you on Google

If you're not on the first page of Google, you're practically invisible. 75% of people never scroll past page one.

Competitors are winning your customers

While you rely on word of mouth, competitors with professional websites are capturing the customers searching for exactly what you offer.

You don't have time to deal with tech

Running a business is already a full-time job. The last thing you need is to stress about domains, hosting, and website updates.

Agency quotes are way out of budget

Traditional web agencies charge tens of thousands of rands. Small businesses deserve a professional website without the crippling price tag.

Your site isn't secure or mobile-friendly

Over 60% of South African web traffic is mobile. A slow, unsecured site loses visitors instantly and damages your reputation.

Everything Your Business Needs to Succeed

Every website we design comes fully equipped — no hidden extras, no technical headaches.

Fully Responsive Design

Looks perfect on phones, tablets, and desktops — guaranteed. No extra charge.

Fast Loading Speed

Optimised for speed from day one. Fast sites rank higher on Google and keep visitors engaged.

SSL Security Certificate

Your site runs on HTTPS so customers trust it — and Google ranks it above unsecured sites.

Professional Business Email

Look credible with a branded email like info@yourbusiness.co.za included in your plan.

.co.za Domain Registration

Your own .co.za domain gives your business a local, trustworthy identity online.

Reliable Web Hosting Included

Hosting is included in your monthly plan — no separate bills, no technical setup required.

Basic SEO Setup

We configure your site's titles, descriptions, and structure so Google can find and rank you.

Monthly Maintenance Included

We handle updates, backups, and fixes so your site stays secure and running smoothly every month.

What Every Website We Build Comes With

Affordable should not mean cut corners. Every site we ship meets the same standards regardless of plan.

Mobile-first

Designed for the phone screen first, then scaled up. Most of your visitors arrive on a phone, often on mobile data.

Loads in under three seconds

On a normal South African connection, not a fibre line in an office.

Accessible

Readable contrast, proper heading structure and alt text on images, so everyone can use your site.

One clear action per page

Every page tells the visitor exactly what to do next — call, WhatsApp or enquire.

Contact details everywhere

Phone and WhatsApp reachable from every screen without scrolling.

Search-ready from day one

Every page gets a unique title and description. Nothing is left on WordPress defaults.

Backed up automatically

So a bad update never costs you your website.

Day 7

Built Around What Your Industry Needs

A plumber and an online clothing store need very different websites. The price is the same; the build is not.

  • Trades and home services. Plumbers, electricians, builders, painters, garden services, cleaners. These customers are urgent and mostly on a phone — a burst geyser at 7pm does not get researched, it gets phoned. We build for one-tap calling, WhatsApp on every screen, clear service areas and visible pricing guidance, working alongside your Google Business Profile. See our trades packages.
  • Retail and e-commerce. Product pages that load fast on mobile data, a checkout that does not lose people, local payment gateways South Africans recognise, and delivery options stated clearly before checkout. Start with our e-commerce plan.
  • Professional services. Accountants, consultants, attorneys, agencies. The site's job here is credibility — clear services, real qualifications, genuine testimonials, and an enquiry form that does not demand someone's life story.
  • Health and wellness. Practitioners, clinics, therapists, salons. Booking-friendly layouts, clear treatment and pricing information, and the trust signals that make someone comfortable choosing you.
  • Restaurants and hospitality. Menus that load instantly on a phone, hours that are always current, location and directions front and centre, and links straight to delivery platforms.

If your industry is not listed, it does not mean we have not built for it. We have worked across flooring, paving, optometry, auctions, events, refrigeration, transport and plenty more.

What Happens After Your Website Goes Live

Most of the difference between an affordable website and a cheap one shows up after launch, not before it.

  • Your monthly maintenance hour. Message us with what needs changing — new prices, a new service, fresh photos, updated hours — and it gets done. You are not filing a ticket into a void; you are messaging the people who built it.
  • Security and updates handled. WordPress core, themes and plugins get updated regularly. This is the most common reason small business sites get hacked, and the first thing that stops happening after a once-off build.
  • Automatic backups. Taken regularly and kept off-site. If anything goes wrong we restore it.
  • Uptime monitoring. We know if your site goes down, usually before you do.
  • Room to grow. A new page for a service you have added, a seasonal promotion, a second location — small changes are part of your plan and larger additions get quoted honestly.
  • No lock-in. Your text, your images, your domain. All yours.

The point of a monthly plan is not just spreading the cost. It is that somebody is still responsible for your website in month eighteen.

Luky Sibusiso

A Durban Team That Answers the Phone

The Webster is a web design and digital marketing agency based in Phoenix, Durban, working with small businesses across South Africa. We are not a template factory and not an overseas call centre. When you phone, you speak to the person who builds your site. When you need a price changed on Tuesday, it is changed on Tuesday.

We built our pricing around a simple observation: most South African small businesses do not need a R30,000 website. They need a professional one they can afford every month, that somebody else looks after.

Where we work

  • Roughly half our clients are in KwaZulu-Natal — Durban, Umhlanga, Pinetown, Phoenix, Ballito and Pietermaritzburg.
  • The rest are spread across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Nelspruit and Polokwane, plus a few in Namibia and Eswatini.
  • Almost everything runs by phone, WhatsApp and email. Clients in Cape Town get exactly the same service as the ones down the road.

Why we price the way we do

  • Honestly: we make very little on a single R250 client in the first few months.
  • The model only works because clients stay, and clients only stay if the website keeps earning its place.
  • An agency paid R30,000 upfront has been paid whether your site performs or not. We have not.

Is This Right for Your Business?

A good fit if you

  • Run a small business, trade or service company in South Africa.
  • Need a professional site without a large upfront cost.
  • Want hosting, domain, email and maintenance handled for you.
  • Have up to 5 pages of content, or up to 50 products for e-commerce.
  • Want someone local you can actually call.

Probably not for you if you

  • Need a large custom build with bespoke functionality.
  • Require a booking system, member logins or API integrations.
  • Have more than 50 products to sell.
  • Want a once-off build with no ongoing relationship.
  • Need a full SEO or paid advertising campaign included in the same price.

If you are in the second group, tell us anyway. We will either quote properly or point you towards someone better suited.

Common Questions About Website Costs

Everything people ask us before getting started.

How much does a website cost in South Africa?

Most South African small business websites cost between R5,590 and R15,000 once-off, with the average five-page site around R6,254, plus R500 to R2,500 a month for hosting and maintenance. Established agencies typically start around R30,000. Our plans start at R250 a month with no upfront cost and everything included.

Is R250 a month really the full price?

Yes. That covers design, hosting, your .co.za domain, SSL, business email, basic SEO setup and one hour of monthly maintenance. There is no setup fee. The only things billed separately are extras you choose to add, such as paid advertising, logo design or an ongoing SEO campaign.

Do I own my website?

Yes. The website is yours. Your content, your images and your design belong to you, not to us.

Is there a minimum contract?

No. There is no contract and no minimum term. You can cancel at any time.

What happens to my domain if I cancel?

You keep it. Your .co.za domain is registered in your business name and stays yours whatever happens.

How long does it take to build?

Seven days from our first conversation, provided we have your content and images. Most sites go live faster.

What if I need more than 5 pages?

Talk to us. Additional pages are quoted based on what you need, and it is usually a small adjustment to the monthly figure rather than a new plan.

Can you redesign my existing website?

Yes. We regularly rebuild dated sites and migrate them onto our hosting. Your existing domain moves across with you.

Will my website show up on Google?

Every site includes basic SEO setup — titles, descriptions, sitemap and Search Console submission — which is what gets you indexed. Ranking competitively for busy search terms takes ongoing work, which we offer separately. We will not promise page one as part of a R250 plan, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

Do you work with businesses outside Durban?

Yes. We work with businesses across South Africa and most projects run remotely by phone, WhatsApp and email.

What do I need to provide?

Your logo if you have one, your contact details, a short description of your services, and any photos you would like used. If you do not have photos or written content, we will help.

Can I sell products on the R250 plan?

No. That is the E-Commerce plan at R390 a month for up to 20 products, or R455 a month for up to 50.

Do you charge VAT on top?

No. All prices shown include VAT.

What if something breaks?

Message us. Fixes are covered by your monthly maintenance, and backups run automatically so nothing is ever lost.

Why is your pricing so much lower than other agencies?

Three reasons. We are a small Durban team without expensive offices or account managers. We build on WordPress rather than developing everything from scratch, which cuts build time dramatically without cutting quality. And we spread the cost monthly instead of charging upfront, which means we rely on doing good enough work that you stay.

What is the catch with R250 a month?

There is no hidden one, but there are genuine limits and we would rather state them. You get up to 5 pages, one hour of maintenance a month, and a site built on a proven platform rather than custom-developed. If you need a 40-page site, a booking engine or a custom application, this plan is not for you and we will say so.

Can I upgrade later?

Yes. Plenty of clients start on Standard and move to E-Commerce when they are ready to sell online. Your site and domain carry across; only the monthly figure changes.

Do you write the content for my website?

We will help structure it and tidy what you send. For a straightforward five-page site that is usually enough. If you need substantial copywriting from scratch, we will quote for it separately.

How do I pay?

Monthly by EFT or debit order. No card details held and no annual commitment taken upfront.

What if I already have a domain?

We will point it at your new site. You keep it registered wherever it is, or we can move it across. Your choice.

Do you build websites in languages other than English?

Yes, though we will need the translated text from you. Afrikaans and isiZulu are the most common requests.
