What R350 Actually Gets You

Every logo design agency says "affordable". Almost none of them tell you exactly what lands in your inbox. Here is precisely what you receive.

  • Two initial concepts. Two genuinely different directions to choose from, not one design with the colour changed.
  • Two revision rounds. Once you pick a direction, we refine it until it is right.
  • Full colour and black-and-white versions. You need both. Black-and-white is what gets used on invoices, faxes, stamps, embroidery and single-colour signage.
  • PNG, SVG and PDF files. PNG for web and social, SVG for anything that needs to scale, PDF for printers. Most cheap logo deals hand over a single low-resolution PNG, which is useless the moment you order signage.
  • Full ownership, transferred to you. Once it is paid and delivered, the logo is yours with no restrictions and no licence fees.
  • Once-off payment. No monthly fee, no subscription, no renewal.
  • Delivery in 3 to 5 business days.

What R350 does not include, so there are no surprises: brand strategy workshops, market research, competitor analysis, naming, or an unlimited revision process. If you need those, you are looking at a R8,000+ branding project and we will tell you so honestly rather than sell you a R350 logo that cannot carry that weight.

What Does Logo Design Actually Cost in South Africa?

Logo pricing in South Africa runs from free to over R25,000, which makes it almost impossible to judge whether a quote is fair. Here is the honest breakdown.

Who designs itTypical priceWhat you actually get
Free logo makersR0Template-based, often low-resolution only, frequently shared with other businesses. Vector files usually cost extra.
New or part-time designerR800 – R1,500A basic, often template-influenced design with limited revisions and file formats.
The WebsterR350 – R1,999Custom design, 2 concepts, 2 revisions, all file formats, full ownership.
Experienced freelancerR2,500 – R6,000Custom work with a proper brief, several concepts and a brand colour palette.
Established SA agencyR5,000 – R15,000Competitor research, colour psychology, multiple rounds and a full brand guideline document.
Full brand identity projectR15,000 – R25,000+Strategy, naming, positioning, complete brand system and rollout across all materials.

For most South African small businesses, a professional logo lands somewhere between R950 and R4,500. The honest difference between a R1,500 logo and an R8,000 one is usually not the drawing — it is the research, the strategy and the number of revision rounds behind it.

When R350 is the right call

  • You are starting out and need a professional mark to trade under.
  • You know roughly what you want and can brief it clearly.
  • You need files you can actually use — web, print and signage — without paying extra for them.

When you should spend more

  • You are entering a crowded market and need positioning work, not just a mark.
  • You need trademark screening before you commit to a name.
  • You are rebranding an established business where getting it wrong is expensive.

We would rather point you towards a full branding agency than take R350 for something that needs R15,000 of thinking behind it.

What About Free Logo Design?

Plenty of people search for a free logo, and it is a fair question. Here is a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Free logo makers genuinely exist and they genuinely work for some situations. If you are testing an idea, running a side project, or need something on a flyer by Friday, use one. We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

Where they cost you later:

  • You rarely own it outright. Most free tools license the design to you rather than transferring ownership, and the underlying icon is usually available to anyone else using the same tool.
  • Someone else has your logo. Template libraries get reused. We have seen two competing South African businesses in the same town trading under near-identical marks.
  • The free version is low resolution. The vector files you need for signage, vehicle branding or embroidery are almost always behind a paywall — often R500 to R1,000, which is more than our logo costs.
  • No black-and-white version. You will need one, usually at the least convenient moment.
  • It cannot be trademarked. A template design you do not own outright cannot be registered as your trademark.

The practical test: if your business will still exist in two years, and your logo will end up on a vehicle, a sign or a uniform, pay for it once and own it. If it is a weekend project, use a free tool with our blessing.

Cheap Logo Design: What to Watch Out For

Looking for an affordable logo is sensible. Buying the cheapest one you find often costs more in the end. These are the questions worth asking anyone, including us.

  • "You will get the source files" — ask which ones. A JPEG is not a source file. Without an SVG you cannot scale your logo for signage, and you will end up paying someone to redraw it.
  • Stock icons dressed up as custom work. Some cheap designs are a purchased icon with your business name beside it. Ask directly whether the mark is original.
  • Ownership that never transfers. Some designers retain rights or license the work. Get it in writing that full ownership passes to you on payment.
  • Unlimited concepts as a selling point. Fifty mediocre options are worse than two considered ones. Volume usually signals a template process rather than design thinking.
  • No black-and-white version. Cheap to include, expensive to add later, and you will need it.
  • No revision limit stated. "Unlimited revisions" usually means unlimited until they stop replying. A stated number is more honest.
  • A logo that only works on screen. Fine detail and gradients look good on a website and turn to mud on a vehicle decal or an embroidered shirt.

Four questions worth asking any logo designer:
Will I receive an SVG? Is the mark original or built from a stock icon? Does full ownership transfer to me on payment? Do I get a black-and-white version?

We answer yes to all four. Any designer worth paying will too.

Why Your Business Needs a Professional Logo & Brand Identity

Your logo and brand identity are the first things customers notice about your business. Getting them right is one of the most important investments you can make.

You have no logo at all

Operating without a logo makes your business look temporary and untrustworthy. Customers are far less likely to buy from a business that doesn't have a recognisable brand identity.

Your current logo looks outdated or unprofessional

A poorly designed logo can actively hurt your brand. Customers judge the quality of your service by the quality of your visual identity — an outdated logo signals an outdated business.

Your branding is inconsistent across platforms

Different colours on your website, social media and printed materials confuses customers and weakens your brand. Consistent branding builds recognition and trust over time.

You don't have the right file formats

A logo delivered only as a low-resolution PNG is useless for print, signage or large-format media. Without vector files like SVG, your logo blurs and pixelates when resized.

Your business documents don't look professional

Sending invoices, quotes and emails without branded templates makes your business look small and unprofessional — even if your actual service is excellent.

Design agencies charge too much

Most South African branding agencies charge R5,000 to R15,000 for a logo and brand identity. Small businesses deserve professional branding at a price that makes sense for their budget.

The File Formats and Why They Matter

The single most common complaint about cheap logo design is receiving one file that turns out to be useless. Here is what each format is for.

SVG — the important one

A vector file. It scales to any size without blurring, from a business card to a building sign. If a designer will not give you an SVG, you do not really own a usable logo.

PNG — for screens

Transparent background, ideal for your website, social profiles, email signature and presentations. Fine on screen, limited for large print.

PDF — for printers

What every printer, signwriter and embroiderer will ask you for. Keeps the design sharp and the colours accurate.

Full colour version

Your primary logo, used almost everywhere.

Black and white version

Needed for single-colour printing, stamps, embroidery, faxed documents and anywhere colour is not possible. Frequently left out of cheap packages.

Every one of these, included

All formats and both versions come standard from R350. None of it is billed as an extra.

What Separates a Logo That Works From One That Just Looks Nice

A logo is not decoration. It is a working tool that has to survive being shrunk, printed in one colour, embroidered onto a shirt and read from across a parking lot. These are the tests we design against.

  • It works small. Your logo will spend most of its life at the size of a phone app icon or a social media profile picture. If the detail disappears at 32 pixels, the design has failed regardless of how good it looks on a big screen.
  • It works in one colour. Stamps, embroidery, faxed documents, engraved signage and single-colour printing all strip your colours away. A logo that only reads in full colour will let you down at the worst moment.
  • It is legible at a distance. On a vehicle, a shopfront or a site board, people read your logo while moving. Thin fonts and tight letter spacing vanish at ten metres.
  • It does not chase trends. Styles date quickly, and a logo redesign every three years costs far more than getting it right once. We design for ten years, not for this season.
  • It suits your actual customers. A logo that would win a design award can still be wrong for a plumbing business in Pinetown. The right design is the one that makes your customers trust you, not the one that impresses other designers.

This is the part that does not change with price. A R350 logo and a R15,000 logo should both pass every one of these tests. What the extra money buys is research, strategy and positioning — not a mark that works harder at small sizes.

A Durban Team That Answers the Phone

The Webster is a design and digital marketing agency based in Phoenix, Durban, working with more than 150 small businesses across South Africa — Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Gqeberha and everywhere between. When you message us about your logo, you are speaking to the person designing it.

Why our logos cost what they do

  • We are a small team without agency overheads, account managers or offices to pay for.
  • We design logos alongside websites and branding, so a logo is rarely a standalone job for us.
  • We would rather design fifty honest R350 logos than five overpriced ones.

What we will not do

  • Sell you a R350 logo when your business genuinely needs a proper branding project.
  • Hand over a single low-resolution file and call it done.
  • Keep ownership of work you have paid for.

Is This Right for Your Business?

A good fit if you

  • Need a professional logo to launch or refresh a small business.
  • Want to own your files outright, in every format.
  • Can describe the style and feel you are after.
  • Want branded business cards, email signatures or documents to match.
  • Prefer a once-off price with no subscription.

Probably not for you if you

  • Need brand strategy, naming or market positioning work.
  • Require trademark searches and legal clearance.
  • Are rebranding an established company with existing equity to protect.
  • Need a full brand guidelines document for a large team.
  • Want unlimited concepts and revision rounds.

If you are in the second group, talk to us anyway. We will quote properly or point you to a branding agency better suited to the job.

Common Questions About Logo Design & Branding

Everything you need to know before getting your professional logo and brand identity designed.

Logo design in South Africa ranges from free template tools up to R25,000 or more for a full brand identity project. Most small businesses pay between R950 and R4,500 for a professional logo. Established agencies typically charge R5,000 to R15,000. At The Webster a custom logo starts from R350 once-off, with a Logo & Brand Kit at R1,500 and a full Brand Essentials Pack at R1,999.
Yes, free logo makers exist and they work fine for testing an idea or a side project. The catches are that you rarely own the design outright, the underlying template is available to other businesses, and the vector files you need for signage or embroidery are usually behind a paywall that often costs more than our R350 logo. If your business will still exist in two years, pay once and own it.
We are a small Durban team without agency overheads, account managers or offices to pay for, and we design logos alongside websites and branding rather than treating each one as a standalone project. What we do not include at R350 is brand strategy, market research or naming. If you need those, we will say so rather than sell you something that cannot carry the weight.
Original. Your logo is designed specifically for your business, not assembled from a stock icon library. This is worth asking any designer directly, because a common shortcut in cheap logo design is a purchased icon placed next to your business name.
PNG, SVG and PDF, each in full colour and black and white. PNG is for screens and social media, SVG is the vector file that scales to any size without blurring, and PDF is what printers and signwriters will ask you for. All of them are included as standard.
Yes. A vector file such as an SVG can be scaled from a business card to a billboard without losing quality. Without one, your logo will blur the moment it is used on signage, vehicle branding or embroidery, and you will end up paying someone to redraw it. A logo delivered only as a low-resolution PNG is not a complete logo.
Yes. Once payment is complete and the final files are delivered, full ownership transfers to you. You can use it on your website, social media, print, signage, uniforms and anywhere else, with no restrictions and no licence fees.
Because the design is original and ownership transfers to you, there is nothing in our process preventing you from applying to register it. Trademark registration itself is a separate legal process handled through the CIPC, and we would recommend speaking to a trademark attorney before you rely on it commercially.
Most logos are completed within 3 to 5 business days. The Logo & Brand Kit takes 5 to 7 business days, and the Brand Essentials Pack takes 7 to 10 business days because of the additional deliverables.
The Logo Design package includes 2 initial concepts and 2 revision rounds. Being clear about your preferences upfront helps us get it right within those rounds. Additional revisions can be arranged if you need them.
Tell us plainly and we will go back to the drawing board. It happens occasionally and it usually means the brief needs another conversation rather than more designs. We would rather restart than hand over something you are not proud to put on your vehicle.
A logo is a single mark. A brand identity is the whole system around it — your colours, fonts, business card, email signature and document templates — so everything you produce looks like it came from the same business. Our Logo Design package covers the mark; the Brand Kit and Brand Essentials Pack cover the system.
Logo Design at R350 is the logo itself in all formats. Logo & Brand Kit at R1,500 adds your brand colour palette, font selection, business card design and email signature. Brand Essentials Pack at R1,999 adds a 5-page company profile, invoice and quote templates, a branded letterhead and 2 business posters.
Yes. Plenty of clients start with the logo and add the brand kit or individual items once they need them. Your files stay on record so anything added later matches exactly.
A custom logo, brand colour palette, font selection, business card design, email signature, a company profile of up to 5 pages, invoice and quote templates with your logo, a branded letterhead and 2 business posters — all for R1,999 once-off with full ownership.
Yes. We regularly modernise dated logos while keeping whatever recognition the original has built up. Send us what you have and we will tell you honestly whether it needs a refresh or a complete rebuild.
Your business name, a short description of what you do and who your customers are, any colours or styles you like or want to avoid, and examples of logos you admire. The more specific you are, the closer the first concepts will land.
Yes. We work with businesses across South Africa and the whole process runs by WhatsApp, email and phone. Where you are makes no difference to the price or the turnaround.
Yes. The entire process runs remotely — you brief us, we design, you review, we deliver the files. No meetings required unless you want one.
No. All prices shown include VAT and are once-off, with no monthly fees or subscriptions.
