The Most Powerful Free Tool Your Business Isn't Using Properly

A Google Business Profile is what makes your business appear on Google Maps. Without one — or without a properly optimised one — you are invisible to local customers searching for your services.

Appear on Google Maps

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "electrician Durban" your business appears on the map — right at the top of search results, above regular websites.

Get Direct Phone Calls

Customers can call you directly from your Google listing without visiting your website. Your phone number is shown front and centre on every search result.

Collect and Display Reviews

Customer reviews appear directly on your Google listing and are a major ranking factor. More reviews means higher ranking and more trust from new customers.

Rank Above Your Competitors

The local map pack sits above all regular website results on Google. A properly optimised and actively managed GBP consistently outranks neglected or unclaimed profiles.

Track Your Visibility Monthly

Your GBP dashboard shows how many people viewed your profile, clicked your number and asked for directions — proof that your online presence is working.

Google My Business or Google Business Profile?

If you are searching for "Google My Business", you are in the right place. They are the same product.

Google renamed Google My Business (GMB) to Google Business Profile (GBP), and retired the standalone app. Most South African business owners still call it Google My Business, and plenty of agencies still advertise it under the old name, so the two terms are used interchangeably everywhere.

You will also see it written as Google Business Profile optimisation and optimization — the South African and American spellings of the same service. Whichever term you searched for, what you need is the same: a verified, complete, actively managed listing that puts your business on Google Maps when local customers search.

What actually changed: the old GMB dashboard is gone. You now manage your profile directly from Google Search or Google Maps while signed in as the owner. Everything else — categories, services, hours, photos, reviews, posts — works the same way.

What Does Google Business Profile Management Cost in South Africa?

Quotes for this service vary wildly, largely because "Google Business Profile management" gets bundled into local SEO packages of very different sizes.

What you are buyingTypical monthly costWhat it usually includes
The WebsterR500Setup or claim, full optimisation, monthly posts, review management, photo updates and a monthly report.
Entry-level GBP managementFrom R1,380Profile upkeep and basic posting.
Standalone GBP management, agencyAround R4,000Full management, usually month-to-month.

Growth local SEO packageR5,000 – R12,000Adds rank tracking, conversion tracking and monthly reporting.
Full SEO retainerR8,000 – R40,000Complete organic strategy across the whole site.

Honest comparison rather than a sales pitch: a R4,000 a month package typically adds things we do not include at R500 — rank tracking across 30 or more keywords, GA4 conversion tracking, ongoing citation building and monthly written content. If you need that depth, it is worth the money and we will say so.

R500 a month is right if you

  • Are a local trade or service business serving one city or region.
  • Need the profile set up properly and then actively kept alive.
  • Want Google Maps visibility without a full SEO retainer.
  • Have not got the time to post, reply to reviews and update photos every month.

Spend more if you

  • Operate across many locations or a national footprint.
  • Are in a genuinely competitive city-centre category.
  • Need detailed keyword rank tracking and conversion attribution.
  • Want organic website rankings as well as Maps visibility.

Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google Maps

Most South African businesses either have no Google Business Profile or have one that's poorly set up. Either way the result is the same — customers can't find you.

Your profile is unclaimed or incomplete

An unclaimed or incomplete Google Business Profile sends the wrong signals to Google. Competitors with fully filled out profiles consistently outrank you in Maps results.

You have no reviews or very few

Google uses reviews as a major ranking signal. A competitor with 30 reviews will almost always outrank you with 3 — regardless of how much better your service actually is.

Your profile has no photos or posts

Google rewards active profiles. A profile with regular photo uploads and weekly posts ranks higher than one that was set up once and never touched again.

Wrong category or business information

Incorrect business categories, wrong service areas or inconsistent NAP information actively hurt your ranking. Most business owners don't even know these errors exist.

Unanswered reviews are hurting you

Not responding to reviews — both positive and negative — signals to Google and customers that your business is inactive. Every unanswered review is a missed trust opportunity.

You don't know what's working

Without monthly reporting you have no idea how many people are finding your business on Google, clicking your number or asking for directions. You can't improve what you don't measure.

Everything Included in Your Monthly GBP Management

We don't just set it up and disappear. We actively manage your Google Business Profile every single month so your ranking keeps climbing.

01

Full GBP Setup & Optimisation

We claim, verify and fully optimise your Google Business Profile from scratch — correct categories, complete business info, keyword-rich description and all fields filled in properly.

02

Weekly Posts & Updates

We publish regular posts on your GBP covering your services, special offers and business updates. Active profiles rank higher — Google rewards businesses that post consistently.

03

Monthly Photo Uploads

We upload fresh photos of your work, team or services every month. Profiles with regular photo activity consistently outrank those with no photos or outdated images.

04

We respond to every customer review — positive or negative — on your behalf. Professional review responses build trust and show Google your business is active and engaged.

05

Review Collection System

We give you a direct review link, QR code card and WhatsApp message template so asking for reviews becomes effortless after every job. More reviews means higher ranking.

06

Every month we send you a WhatsApp report showing your profile views, search appearances, phone clicks and direction requests — so you can see exactly how your visibility is growing.

How to Set Up a Google Business Profile in South Africa

You can do this yourself, and we would rather show you how than pretend it is a secret. Here is the process, including the South African quirks that trip people up.

  1. 1. Check whether a listing already existsSearch your business name on Google Maps first. Google auto-generates listings from other sources, and claiming an existing profile is very different from creating a new one. Creating a duplicate is the single most common mistake, and duplicates suppress each other in rankings.
  2. 2. Create or claim itGo to Google Business Profile and sign in with the Google account you actually want to own this long term — not a personal address you may lose access to. This account will hold the keys to your listing.
  3. 3. Choose your primary category carefullyThis is the highest-impact decision you will make and it directly determines which searches you appear in. Pick the category that describes what you are, not what you sell. One primary category, then add secondary ones.
  4. 4. If your exact trade has no category, do not force itGoogle's South African category list has real gaps, and the picker matches on the start of what you type rather than searching the whole phrase — so a category can look missing when it exists under a different first word. If yours genuinely is not there, choose the closest legitimate category and describe the specifics under Services instead. Never pick an unrelated category because it sounds more searched.
  5. 5. Set your service area honestlyIf you visit customers, set a service area rather than a storefront address. Listing suburbs you do not actually travel to is a quick way to get complaints and it does not help you rank there anyway.
  6. 6. VerifyUsually by video, sometimes by postcard or phone. Video verification is now the most common route in South Africa and means filming your premises, signage, equipment and proof you operate the business. Have it ready before you start.
  7. 7. Fill in absolutely everythingHours, phone, website, description, attributes, opening date and a full list of services. Completeness is a ranking factor. A half-filled profile loses to a complete one in the same suburb.
  8. 8. Add real photosYour premises, vehicles, team, completed work. Stock photography is obvious and actively unhelpful. Profiles with genuine photos get noticeably more calls and direction requests.
  9. 9. Start collecting reviews properlyAsk every satisfied customer, share your review link directly, and reply to every review. Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking factors. Never buy them.
  10. 10. Post regularly and keep it currentMost profiles are set up once and abandoned. Updates, offers and fresh photos signal that the business is active. This is the part almost nobody keeps doing, and it is where the ranking gap opens up.

If that list looks like a lot of ongoing work, that is the honest reality of it — and it is precisely what our R500 a month covers. But if you would rather do it yourself, the steps above are the whole job. We manage profiles for businesses across South Africa and we would still rather you had a good profile you run yourself than no profile at all.

Is This Right for Your Business?

A good fit if you

  • Serve customers in a specific city, suburb or region.
  • Get work from people searching "near me" — trades, health, retail, professional services.
  • Have a profile that is unclaimed, half-filled or has not been touched in a year.
  • Want more calls and direction requests without a full SEO budget.
  • Do not have time to post and reply to reviews every month.

Probably not for you if you

  • Sell online only, with no local service area or premises.
  • Operate across dozens of locations needing bulk management.
  • Need full organic SEO across your whole website.
  • Have no way to answer the calls it generates.
  • Are in a category Google does not allow a profile for.

That last point is worth checking early. Google does not permit profiles for every kind of business, and purely online businesses without a service area are not eligible. Ask us before you spend anything and we will tell you straight.

Common Questions About Google Business Profile Management

Everything you need to know before getting started.

A Google Business Profile is a free listing that makes your business appear on Google Maps and in local search results. When someone searches for a service near them, businesses with optimised Google Business Profiles appear in the local map pack — the top three results that show before regular website listings.
At The Webster, Google Business Profile management is included in our R500 per month package alongside your professional website. This covers full GBP setup and optimisation, monthly posts, photo uploads, review responses and a monthly WhatsApp visibility report. There is no setup fee and no hidden costs.
A fully optimised Google Business Profile helps your business appear in the Google Maps local pack when customers search for your services nearby. Businesses that appear in this section receive significantly more calls, website visits and direction requests than those that do not. Combined with consistent reviews and regular posts, a well-managed GBP can become your most powerful source of new customers.
Our Google Business Profile management service includes full initial setup and optimisation, accurate business information across all fields, weekly posts to keep your profile active, regular photo uploads, responding to customer reviews on your behalf, monitoring for any profile issues and a monthly WhatsApp report showing your views, clicks and phone call stats.
Most businesses start seeing improved Google Maps visibility within 4 to 8 weeks of having their Google Business Profile fully optimised and actively managed. Results depend on your location, competition and how consistently you collect customer reviews. Businesses in lower-competition areas often see results faster.
Yes. A Google Business Profile and a professional website work together. Your GBP gets you found on Google Maps while your website builds credibility, explains your services and converts visitors into customers. Businesses with both consistently outperform those with only one or neither. Our R500 per month package includes both.
Google uses the number, quality and recency of reviews as a major ranking factor for local businesses. A business with 50 five-star reviews will almost always rank higher on Google Maps than a competitor with 5 reviews, even if the competitor has a better website. Consistent review collection is one of the most impactful things you can do to improve your local ranking.
The Google Maps local pack is the section that appears at the top of Google search results when someone searches for a local service. It shows three businesses on a map along with their name, rating, address and phone number. Appearing in this section dramatically increases the number of calls and visits your business receives because it sits above all regular website results.
Yes. If you do not yet have a Google Business Profile or if your existing profile is incomplete, we set it up from scratch. This includes claiming and verifying the profile, filling in all business information accurately, selecting the correct categories, adding photos and writing your business description with the right keywords.
We manage Google Business Profiles for businesses across all of South Africa including Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, East London, Bloemfontein, Pietermaritzburg, Nelspruit and surrounding areas. We operate fully online so distance is never a barrier.
The most effective way to get more Google reviews is to ask every customer directly after a job using a simple WhatsApp message with your direct review link. We provide you with a direct Google review link, a QR code card for your customers and a copy-paste WhatsApp message template so collecting reviews becomes a simple habit after every job.
There is no contract. Our Google Business Profile management is included in a month-to-month subscription that you can cancel anytime without penalty. We are confident enough in our service to offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile and retired the separate app. Most South African business owners and plenty of agencies still use the old name. Whichever you searched for, it is the same listing that puts you on Google Maps.
Choose the right primary category, complete every field including services and attributes, add genuine photos of your premises and work, set accurate hours and service areas, collect reviews consistently and reply to all of them, and post updates regularly. Completeness and ongoing activity are both ranking factors, and it is the ongoing part that most businesses stop doing.
Yes, and we have published the full step-by-step process on this page. It is free to create. What takes the time is doing it correctly and then keeping it active every month, which is what our R500 covers.
Google's South African category list has genuine gaps, and the picker matches what you type from the start of the category name rather than searching the whole phrase, so categories often look missing when they are not. If yours truly is not available, choose the closest legitimate category and describe your specialisation under Services. Never pick an unrelated category because it seems more popular.
Video verification is now the most common route in South Africa. You film your premises, signage, equipment and evidence that you operate the business. Postcard and phone verification still appear for some categories. Have your proof ready before starting, because a failed attempt delays things considerably.
Not necessarily. If you travel to customers, you can set a service area and hide your address. You do need a real, verifiable business location — a virtual office or a PO box will not qualify and risks suspension.
Common causes are keyword stuffing in the business name, an address that cannot be verified, a category that does not match the business, duplicate listings, or sudden large edits to a long-established profile. Adding keywords to your business name is the most frequently reported violation and the easiest to avoid.
Only if you genuinely have more than one location or distinct business. Duplicate profiles for the same business compete with each other and usually get one of them suspended. If you find a duplicate, it should be merged or removed rather than left running.
The three main factors are relevance, distance and prominence. You control relevance through categories and services, you cannot change distance, and prominence comes from reviews, activity and citations. In practice that means a complete profile, steady genuine reviews, consistent business details across the web, and regular posting.
