How to Get More Painting Clients in South Africa (2026 Guide)

Search “how to get painting jobs” in South Africa and you mostly find job adverts for painters who want to be employed. If you run your own painting business, you need the opposite: a steady flow of homeowners, landlords, body corporates and businesses who want to hire you.

This guide covers ten practical ways to get more painting clients in 2026, roughly in the order we would do them. The first few are free. We build websites and manage Google profiles for painting contractors and other trades across South Africa, so these are the things we see working, not theory.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile properly

Most homeowners start with a search like “painters near me” or “house painters Durbanville” and phone one of the three businesses Google shows on the map. Those three spots get the most calls.

  • Choose Painter as your primary category. Add secondary categories only if you really offer them, for example waterproofing service or roofing contractor for roof painting.
  • Set your service area to the suburbs you actually work in.
  • List every service separately: interior painting, exterior painting, roof painting, waterproofing, damp treatment, wallpaper, commercial painting.
  • Upload before-and-after photos from every job. Painting is one of the most visual trades there is, so use that.

Our Google Business Profile setup guide walks through each step, and our local SEO checklist explains what decides who gets into the top three.

2. Turn every finished job into a review and a photo

A paint job is a big decision. A full exterior repaint can easily cost tens of thousands of rand, and homeowners are nervous about picking the wrong painter. Reviews and photos calm those nerves more than anything you can say.

  • Take a “before” photo on day one, from the same angle you will use for the “after”.
  • Ask for a Google review on the final walk-through, when the client is admiring the result, and send your review link on WhatsApp that evening.
  • Ask every client. Google does not allow you to offer discounts or gifts for reviews, or to ask only the happy ones.
  • Reply to every review, and post the before-and-after on your profile the same week.

3. Go after body corporate and complex repaints

This is the biggest opportunity most small painting businesses never chase. Every sectional title complex and estate has to repaint its buildings every so many years, and the work is usually planned and budgeted in advance. A single complex can be worth more than a year of small residential jobs.

How it usually works:

  • The trustees or the managing agent decide the buildings need repainting, often after a maintenance plan or an AGM.
  • They ask several contractors for quotes and compare them at a trustee meeting.
  • They care about insurance, references from other complexes, a clear schedule, how you will manage residents, and a written guarantee.

Make a list of managing agents in your area, introduce yourself, and ask to be added to their list of contractors. Have a one-page document ready with your insurance, your guarantee, photos of complexes you have done and two references. When a repaint comes up, you want to be one of the three names they phone.

4. Partner with estate agents and landlords

Houses get painted before they are sold and between tenants. Estate agents know which sellers need a quick refresh before photos and show days, and rental agents need a reliable painter to turn flats around fast.

  • Offer agents a fast turnaround for pre-sale touch-ups and move-out repaints.
  • Send clear before-and-after photos and a simple invoice they can pass on.
  • Agree a standard price per room or per square metre for their properties so they can approve work quickly.

One busy rental agency can keep a small team busy every month of the year.

5. Quote quickly and clearly

Many painting jobs are won by the contractor who sends a clear quote first. Homeowners often ask three painters and choose the one who seemed most organised.

  • Reply to enquiries the same day, even if only to book a site visit.
  • Itemise the quote: preparation, crack repairs, primer, number of coats, paint brand and range, and clean-up. A low quote that leaves out preparation looks the same as yours until the paint peels.
  • State your guarantee and how long the job will take.
  • Follow up two or three days later. Many clients simply forget to reply.

Explaining why your price includes proper preparation is one of the best ways to beat cheaper quotes without dropping your rate.

6. Plan around the weather

Exterior painting depends on dry weather, and South Africa’s seasons differ by region. Inland, in Gauteng and the Free State, summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and winter is dry. In the Western Cape it is the other way around, with wet winters and dry summers. Coastal KwaZulu-Natal has humidity and summer rain to work around.

Use this in your marketing:

  • Promote exterior work and roof painting a month or two before your region’s dry season, so the diary is full when the weather turns.
  • Push interior painting, feature walls and commercial jobs during your wet season.
  • Promote waterproofing and damp treatment just before the rains, when homeowners start worrying about leaks.

7. Offer the jobs people search for

“Painting” is broad. Homeowners search for the specific problem in front of them:

  • Roof painting and roof waterproofing
  • Damp and mould treatment
  • Exterior repaints and crack repairs
  • Interior painting and feature walls
  • Painting for landlords and rentals
  • Commercial and office painting, often after hours

If you do these, show each one separately on your Google profile and your website. Each one is a separate search and a separate way for a client to find you.

8. Get a simple website with your work on it

A painter’s website is mostly a portfolio. People want to see work like theirs: a double-storey exterior, a complex, a roof, a lounge. A simple site with a page for each service, a gallery of before-and-after photos, your areas, your guarantee and a WhatsApp button does more selling than any brochure.

It doesn’t need to be expensive. You can see the kind of site we build on our web design for painters page, and our guide to website design packages and prices explains the options.

9. Use local Facebook groups and yard signs

“Can anyone recommend a good painter?” is posted in suburban Facebook groups every week. Join the groups for the areas you cover, answer questions helpfully and post before-and-after photos on the group’s business day if it has one. Ask happy clients to tag you when somebody asks.

On site, a neat board at the gate with your name and number (with the client’s permission) reaches every neighbour who walks past. Neighbours see the result every day, and street-by-street work is the cheapest work to win.

10. Use lead sites carefully

Quote platforms can fill gaps in a quiet month, but you often pay per lead whether or not you win the job, and the same lead goes to several painters, so the lowest price tends to win. Use them as a top-up while you build your own Google profile, reviews and agent relationships. Those keep bringing in work without a fee per enquiry.

  2. Send your review link to your last ten happy clients.
  3. Upload five before-and-after photos.
  4. Write a one-page document for managing agents with your insurance, guarantee and references.
  5. List ten managing agents and ten rental agents to contact next week.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to get more painting clients?

A complete Google Business Profile with before-and-after photos and a steady flow of reviews. Most homeowners choose from the painters Google shows on the map, so that is where the quickest gains are.

How do painters get body corporate work?

Get onto the contractor lists of managing agents in your area. Have your insurance, guarantee, references from other complexes and photos ready, and respond quickly when they ask for quotes.

Do painting contractors in South Africa need a website?

A website is not the first step, but it makes everything else work better. It shows your work, lets Google show you for each service and area, and gives agents and trustees something to check before they invite you to quote.

How do I beat cheaper painting quotes?

Itemise your quote so the client can see the preparation, primer, number of coats and paint brand, and explain your guarantee. Many low quotes leave out preparation, and clients pay more when they understand why.

Are painting lead sites worth it?

They can help in a quiet month, but you usually pay per lead and compete with several painters on price. Use them as a top-up while you build your own profile, reviews and agent relationships.

How much should a painting business spend on marketing?

Many small painting businesses spend between R250 and R1,500 a month on a website and Google profile management, and only add paid advertising once those are working.

Final thoughts

Getting more painting clients comes down to showing your work, being easy to find, quoting quickly and building relationships with the people who control repeat work: managing agents, trustees, estate agents and landlords. None of it needs a big budget. All of it needs consistency.
