What R390 a Month Actually Covers
Online store quotes are notoriously hard to compare because so much gets billed separately. Here is exactly what is included.
- A full online store, designed for your products. Not a template with your logo dropped in — built around what you sell and how customers buy it.
- Up to 20 products loaded on the E-Commerce plan, or up to 50 on E-Commerce Pro.
- Secure payment integration. Paystack and PayFast set up and tested, so customers can pay by card without you sharing banking details over WhatsApp.
- Hosting, SSL and your .co.za domain. A store without a valid SSL certificate will be flagged as unsafe at exactly the moment someone tries to enter card details.
- Professional business email. Order confirmations from your own domain rather than a Gmail address.
- Three hours of maintenance every month. New products, price changes, seasonal promotions, plugin updates and backups.
- Built on WooCommerce. Which means no platform transaction fee on top of what your payment gateway charges. More on why that matters below.
What is not included, so there are no surprises: payment gateway transaction fees (those go to Paystack or PayFast and are charged per sale), product photography, copywriting for large catalogues, courier integrations, and custom functionality such as subscriptions or multi-vendor marketplaces. We quote those separately and honestly.
What Does an Online Store Actually Cost in South Africa?
E-commerce quotes in South Africa range from R8,000 to well over R150,000, which makes it almost impossible to judge whether you are being quoted fairly. Here is the honest picture.
| Route | Upfront | Monthly | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY WooCommerce | Your own time | R350 – R500 | You build, host, maintain and troubleshoot it yourself. |
| The Webster | R0 | R390 – R455 | Built for you, hosted, maintained and supported. Everything included. |
| Small agency store (to 50 products) | From R11,000 | Hosting and maintenance extra | A custom build, then you are largely on your own. |
| Medium store | R18,000 – R25,000 | Extra | More products, more features, more integration work. |
| Freelancer-built Shopify | Around R20,000 | R3,000 – R5,000 | Platform subscription and fees on top of the build. |
| Premium agency build | R80,000+ | R10,000 – R15,000 | Large catalogues, custom functionality, ongoing retainer. |
Most South African small businesses launching their first store are quoted somewhere between R11,000 and R25,000 upfront, before hosting, maintenance or platform fees. Ours is R390 a month with nothing upfront — around R4,680 in your first year, maintenance included.
When to spend more than we charge
- You have hundreds or thousands of products.
- You need courier integration, live shipping rates or warehouse syncing.
- You need subscriptions, bookings or a multi-vendor marketplace.
- You are already doing serious volume and downtime costs real money.
When our plan is the right call
- You are selling online for the first time and want to prove demand before committing capital.
- You have a focused range rather than a huge catalogue.
- You would rather not learn WooCommerce, hosting and SSL certificates yourself.
- You want predictable monthly costs instead of a large upfront invoice.

WooCommerce or Shopify — Which Is Better in South Africa?
This is the decision that quietly costs South African store owners the most money, and almost nobody explains it before you have already committed.
Shopify is excellent software. The catch is specific to South Africa: Shopify Payments is not available here, so South African merchants use an external gateway like PayFast or Paystack — and Shopify charges an additional platform transaction fee on top for not using its own payment system.
That fee is a percentage of every sale, so it scales with your success. Published 2026 analysis puts the difference at around R24,000 a year for a store doing R100,000 a month, purely in Shopify platform fees that a WooCommerce store does not pay.
| WooCommerce (what we build) | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Platform subscription | None | Monthly, in USD |
| Extra platform fee per sale | None | Yes, because Shopify Payments is unavailable in SA |
| Gateway fees | Paystack or PayFast only | Paystack or PayFast, plus Shopify's cut |
| You own the store | Yes, files and database | You rent it |
| Ease of setup | Harder alone — which is why we do it | Easier to self-start |
| Best for | SA businesses watching margin | Large international catalogues and teams |
We build on WooCommerce for one honest reason: at South African transaction volumes, the platform fee is usually larger than the entire cost of our monthly plan. If you genuinely need Shopify's ecosystem, we will say so — but for most small SA stores it is a margin leak, not a feature.
How You Actually Get Paid Online
The part most first-time store owners have the least clarity on, and the part that decides whether a visitor completes checkout.
Paystack & PayFast
We set up and test South Africa's two most widely recognised gateways. Customers pay by card, EFT or instant EFT without leaving your store, and the money lands in your business account.
Gateway fees are separate
Every gateway charges a percentage plus a small fixed amount per transaction. This goes to them, not to us, and rates change — check current pricing directly with Paystack or PayFast before you budget.
No more WhatsApp banking details
Sending account numbers over WhatsApp and waiting for proof of payment loses sales and looks unprofessional. Proper checkout closes the order while the customer is still interested.
SSL on every page
Browsers now warn visitors away from any page collecting card details without a valid certificate. Yours is included and renewed automatically.
Order management built in
Orders, stock levels and customer details in one dashboard instead of a spreadsheet and a WhatsApp thread.
POPIA-aware setup
Your store collects customer data, which brings obligations under POPIA. We set up privacy policy pages and consent basics — though compliance overall remains your responsibility.
Is Your Business Missing Online Sales?
Thousands of South African customers are searching online for products you sell — but if you don't have an online store, they're buying from someone else.
You're losing sales without an online store
If customers can't buy from you online, they'll find a competitor who lets them. An online store means your business sells 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Customers have no way to pay you online
Sharing banking details over WhatsApp looks unprofessional and loses sales. A proper online store with secure payment integration builds trust and closes more orders.
You're managing orders manually
Tracking orders via WhatsApp messages and spreadsheets wastes hours every week. An online store automates order management so you can focus on growing your business.
Your store doesn't work on mobile
Over 60% of South African shoppers browse and buy on their phones. A store that isn't mobile-friendly loses more than half your potential customers before they even see your products.
E-commerce agencies are too expensive
Most e-commerce agencies in South Africa charge R15,000 to R50,000 upfront. Small businesses deserve a professional online store without a price tag that wipes out their budget.
Customers don't trust your current setup
Without SSL security, a professional design and a trusted payment gateway, customers hesitate to hand over their card details — and you lose the sale.

Cheap Online Stores: What to Watch Out For
An online store has more moving parts than a normal website, which means more places for a cheap quote to hide something. Ask these questions of anyone, including us.
- "Payment integration" that is a bank transfer form. Some cheap stores do not integrate a real gateway at all — they show your banking details and ask for proof of payment. Confirm which gateway is actually being set up.
- Product loading billed per item. A low build price often excludes loading your products. Ask how many are included and what each additional one costs.
- No stock management. A store that cannot track stock will happily sell you something you do not have, and you will find out from an angry customer.
- Hosting that cannot handle a store. E-commerce needs more resources than a brochure site. Cheap shared hosting falls over on your busiest day, which is usually the day you spent money advertising.
- No SSL, or SSL as a paid extra. Non-negotiable for taking payments. If it is an optional line item, walk away.
- No mobile checkout testing. Most South African shoppers buy on a phone, often on mobile data. A checkout that only works on desktop loses the majority of your sales.
- Nobody to call when an order fails. Payment failures need fixing in hours, not weeks. Ask what support actually looks like after launch.
Five questions worth asking any e-commerce developer:
Which payment gateway are you integrating? How many products are included? Is stock management set up? Is hosting suitable for e-commerce traffic? Who fixes it when a payment fails on a Saturday?

Day 14Shipping and Delivery for South African Stores
This is where most first-time South African sellers get stuck, and where most cheap store builds leave you to figure it out alone. Here is what you actually need to decide.
- Decide who pays for delivery before you launch. Free delivery above a threshold is the most common approach because it lifts average order value, but it only works if your margin carries it. Flat-rate delivery is simpler and easier to predict. Charging actual courier cost at checkout is the most accurate and the most likely to cause abandoned carts.
- Set delivery zones honestly. Main-centre delivery in South Africa is usually 2 to 3 working days. Outlying and rural areas take longer and cost more. Stating that clearly on the product page prevents the complaint before it happens.
- Show delivery cost before checkout. Unexpected shipping cost at the final step is the single biggest reason South African shoppers abandon carts. If the number only appears after they have entered their details, you will lose sales you already paid to acquire.
- Pick your courier before you need one. Most small SA stores use one of the national couriers or an aggregator that compares rates. Have an account open before your first order rather than scrambling on the day.
- Local collection is underrated. If you have premises, offering collection costs you nothing and converts customers who baulk at delivery fees.
- Automate the tracking email. "Where is my order?" is the most common message any store owner receives. An automatic dispatch email with a tracking number removes most of them.
We set up your delivery zones, rates and dispatch emails as part of the build. Courier integration with live rates is available but usually unnecessary until you are shipping consistent volume — we will tell you when it is worth adding rather than selling it to you upfront.

Why we price monthly
- Most first-time sellers do not know yet whether online will work for their business.
- Asking for R20,000 upfront to find out is a big bet on an unproven channel.
- R390 a month lets you prove demand first and scale once it works.
What we will not do
- Put you on a platform that quietly takes a percentage of every sale you make.
- Launch a store without testing checkout on a real phone.
- Sell you our plan when your catalogue genuinely needs a bigger build.
Is This Right for Your Business?
A good fit if you
- Are selling online for the first time, or moving off WhatsApp and Facebook orders.
- Have up to 50 products.
- Want card payments without sharing banking details.
- Would rather not manage hosting, SSL and plugin updates.
- Want predictable monthly costs instead of a large upfront build fee.
Probably not for you if you
- Have hundreds or thousands of products.
- Need live courier rates, warehouse syncing or ERP integration.
- Sell subscriptions, bookings or run a multi-vendor marketplace.
- Need same-hour support around the clock.
- Are already trading at volume where downtime costs more than a retainer.
If you are in the second group, talk to us anyway. We will quote properly or point you towards a developer better suited to the job.
